Trial Next For Man In Deaths Of Ex-Girlfriend, Her Daughter
EASTPOINTE, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A 30-year-old man will stand trial in the fatal stabbing of his ex-girlfriend and her 13-month-old daughter in a Detroit suburb.
A judge on Thursday ordered Curtis Hampton Jr. to trial on murder and other charges during a probable cause hearing in Eastpointe. That's the city where the bodies of 29-year-old Monique Rakowski and her daughter Carmon were found Feb. 12 in their home.
Authorities say Rakowski was stabbed more than a dozen times and her daughter once.
Rakowski's cousin said the couple had been together for years and the relationship was volatile. There had been several incidents of domestic violence. "Each time it was a little worse and many people told her to leave or he's going to kill you … but she would say 'I am not afraid of him.'"
Defense attorney Timothy Barkovic says police didn't consider whether Hampton acted in self-defense, as he told investigators.
Hampton pleaded no contest last year to domestic violence and assault charges stemming from an incident with Rakowski. He was sentenced to a year of probation.
