Trial Date Set In City Hall Corruption Case
DETROIT (WWJ) - A federal judge set date of September 6th 2012 for former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, his father, and three others on public corruption charges stemming from a federal investigation.
The 38-count indictment alleges corruption regarding city contracts totaling at least $100 million, involving racketeering conspiracy, extortion, fraud and bribery.
In addition to Kwame Kilpatrick and Bernard Kilpatrick, named in the indictment are Kilpatrick's good friend and city contractor, Bobby Ferguson;Victor Mercado, former head of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department; and Derrick Miller who is a former chief administrative officer for the city of Detroit.
Kilpatrick, along with the others, received their trial date Wednesday afternoon.
In announcing the charges last December, U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said the accused turned the mayor's office into a criminal enterprise.
Kilpatrick is currently serving time in a state prison in Jackson on a probation violation stemming from the text message scandal.
He is eligible for parole as early as July 25th.
