Tri-County Road Crews Out In Full Force After Snowstorm

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Road crews in the tri-county area were summoned to their salt trucks and snow plows Friday morning after a passing storm dumped a few inches of snow in metro Detroit.

Oakland County's northern suburbs were among those getting the heaviest snow. Craig Bryson, with the county's road commission, said it will take some time before the roads are completely cleared.

"There's obviously a lot of snow to move out-of-the-way," said Bryson. "We're getting the salt down, so the freeways and major streets are moving. The secondary streets are still snow-covered and slush-covered and it's going to be a while before we can get it all cleaned up."

Road crews in Macomb County also have their hands full, but Captain Liz Darga, with the county's sheriff's department, said those workers are giving it their all.

"The road crews are doing the best they can. It's still a slow go out there all over the place, but the road crews are out so people need to be careful of them and give them the right of way," said Darga.

Over in Wayne County, road commission crews are also out in full force, according to spokesperson Cindy Dingell.

"We start with the heavier traveled roads, so it would be the freeway system and roads like Ford Avenue, Telegraph and Fort Street, and then we work down to the primary roads like West Road, Six Mile, Five Mile, so that's how we prioritize the system," said Dingell.

The morning commute has been anything from wet and slushy to a frozen sleigh ride. Darga said the best thing drivers can do in conditions like this is to slow down and be patient.

"Take your time and definitely be careful this morning. The travel is very slow, so just allow a lot more time," said Darga.

And when it shoveling your sidewalk and driveway, Dingell said there's one big thing residents need to remember.

"It's illegal to clean your driveway out and throw the snow into the center of the road. We do run into that frequently in driveways and with parking lot owners. But we're advising you don't do that because it creates a hazardous and unsafe situation for motorists traveling along that particular road that may have the snow buildup in it," said Dingell.

Meantime, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory, in effect until noon Friday. Forecasters expect a total snowfall of about one to three inches.

The following communities have issued a Snow Emergency: Berkley, Beverly Hills, Clawson, Ferndale, Huntington Woods, Mount Clemens, Rochester Hills, Royal Oak, Sterling Heights, Troy and Warren. During this time, residents must move their cars off city streets or risk having them ticketed or towed.
