Trenton Man Convicted Of Killing Witness Day Before Scheduled Testimony
YPSILANTI TWP. (WWJ/AP) -- A jury has found a 32-year old-man guilty in the murder case of a 28-year-old who was set to testify against him back in January 2013 in a separate freeway shooting case.
Willie Wimberly of Trenton was convicted of first-degree murder, among other charges, by a Washtenaw County jury on Friday.
Wimberly was facing charges related to the death of Brandon Charles, one of two people wounded on Jan. 1, 2013 following a what authorities described as a "traffic confrontation" along westbound I-94 near Junction on Detroit's southwest side.
Charles was shot to death weeks later on Jan. 28 in Ypsilanti Township the day before he was slated to testify against Wimberly in the freeway case.
Wimberly's preliminary examination was to involve Charles and a second man charged in the first shooting. A co-defendant was acquitted, while another pleaded guilty and is in prison.
A separate jury is deliberating over a fourth defendant involved.
