Southfield Freeway Full Closure Delayed

WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - The complete closure of the Southfield Freeway from I-96 to Ford road has been delayed.  The Michigan Department of Transportation says the repair crews don't have everything they need to set new bridge beams at the Joy Road overpass.   The closure will take place next weekend.

The freeway is still closed completely from I-96 to the Lodge Freeway in Southfield.

When the project does get underway next weekend (beginning June 24), southbound M-39 will be fully closed, while both northbound and southbound M-39 will be closed the following weekend.

MDOT says the closures are needed for demolition of the West Chicago and Lyndon street overpasses, as well as the setting of bridge beams at the newly rebuilt Joy Road overpass.  During the full closures, all traffic will be detoured to Telegraph Road (US-24).

This work is part of the current $80 million investment to reconstruct more than 3 miles of pavement, repair 24 overpasses and replace freeway lighting and barrier walls on sections of M-39 between Lodge Freeway (M-10) in the city of Southfield and Outer Drive in the city of Allen Park.
