Traffic Alert: M-5 Safety Improvements Begin In Farmington Hills
FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - A project to resurface and widen nearly one mile of M-5 in the city of Farmington Hills will begin on Saturday, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
Safety is the purpose behind the work scheduled between Eight Mile Road and Purdue Avenue.
Mia Silver, manager of MDOT's Oakland County Transportation Service Center, said the project is not meant to increase the number of lanes on the stretch of M-5, but rather widen existing lanes to improve the road's safety.
The widening will be accomplished via single left-lane closures in both directions between Eight Mile and Purdue.
A second lane will be closed after 9 am on the eastbound side of M-5, and prior to 3 pm on the westbound lanes. The additional space needed for the widening will be taken from the roadway's median.
Included in the project is resurfacing all lanes of M-5, drainage work, water main installation and curb repairs to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
The $1.8 million project is expected to be completed in October this year.
