Traffic Alert: M-39 Closure This Weekend
WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - The Michigan Department of Transportation will close M-39 Southfield Freeway this weekend so that crews can safely demolish the Joy Road overpass above M-39.
The freeway will be closed between M-153 Ford Road and I-96 beginning 9 p.m. Friday, April 29, and reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday, May 2.
Traffic will be detoured in each direction via M-153, US-24 Telegraph Road and I-96.
The Joy Road overpass demolition is part of an $80 million investment to repair 24 overpasses on M-39 between Eight Mile Road in Detroit and Outer Drive in Allen Park.
The project also includes reconstructing pavement on more than 3 miles of the freeway between M-10 Lodge Freeway and McNichols Road, constructing a new median barrier, updating freeway lighting and electronic signs, and replacing screen walls that separate freeway traffic from service drive traffic.
Full closure of M-39 between M-5 Grand River Avenue and M-10 will begin on Saturday, May 14 and remain in place until the end of October.
