Tornado In St. Louis Cancels Flights In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Jetliners originally bound for St. Louis will have to land somewhere else Saturday, as the city's main airport is closed for business while crews clean up after an apparent tornado.

As a result, scheduled flights into and out of Detroit Metro Airport have been impacted with cancellations.

According to CBS News, no flights are expected in or out of Lambert International Airport in St. Louis for at least several days.

Southwest Airlines is the largest carrier at Lambert International Airport, and spokesperson Marilee McInnis said everything has come to a halt there.

"We're so thankful that no employees or customers were injured," McInnis said. "We do have one damaged aircraft on the ground and our operations are currently cancelled through 4:00 this afternoon while we assess the damage and work closely with the airport."

McInnis said travelers should not go to the airport until they check their flights status on www.southwest.com.

Meantime, Delta Airlines, another major carrier from Detroit into St. Louis, said they have had to cancel nearly 20 flights so far. They too advise air travelers to check on the status of their flights at www.delta.com.
