Torn UCL For Matt Harvey After All-Star Rematch Against Scherzer

Two days after his All-Star Game pitching rematch against Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers, Matt Harvey of the New York Mets may be done for the season after doctors discovered a torn ulnar collateral ligament.
According to ESPN, Harvey complained of fatigue and discomfort following his start against the Tigers. He threw 102 pitches - 70 for strikes - in six and two-thirds innings against Detroit. He only allowed two earned runs, but the Tigers got 13 hits off him.
Before that game, Harvey had not mentioned pain in his arm. After that start, however, he got an MRI that showed the UCL tear. That kind of injury sometimes requires Tommy John surgery, which would mean Harvey, easily the ace of the Mets' staff, would be out for the remainder of the season.
Harvey has the second-lowest ERA in the major leagues at 2.27, trailing only Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers. His WHIP, at 0.93, is the third-lowest behind Kershaw and Scherzer. He is fourth with 191 strikeouts and tied with Scherzer for seventh in innings pitched, with 178 and one-third.
The matchup between Harvey and Scherzer was exactly the kind of pitching duel that was anticipated. It remains to be seen whether Harvey will be able to engage in more such matchups anytime soon.
