Torii Hunter Says Tigers Have Great Balance
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) How's spring training treating the newest Tigers player Torii Hunter?
Pretty darn good, according to a chat Hunter had with 97.1 The Ticket's Steph in Lakeland, Fla.
"The team is great, man, you talk about a great group of guys. A lot of fun in the clubhouse, but on the field, these guys are vicious, and that's what you need," Hunter said. "You need a little bit of balance, a little fun here and there, a little toughness over there ... I like the ball club so far."
Was there any team hazing for the team's newest star? "No," Hunter said. "They pretty much know I've been around the game a long time, so they know we can't mess with Torii because he might just have a flashback and figure out some of the little jokes we have in the clubhouse for the last 18 years of my career. I definitely think I would get them back ... They know who's in charge."
What's he working on in spring training?
"My main focus is just working on my timing, getting the timing down and not so much having three hits because you can get three hits and not feel good, you can barely pop a ball that goes over the third baseman's head and get a hit, but you don't feel good."
He added he plans to hit the last 10 games of spring training hard, grinding, getting his adrenalin flowing and getting focused on the season.
As he settles into the team, Hunter recently got a precious day off -- and how did he spend it? He went to Sea World with his family, which Hunter said wasn't his plan, but he took it in stride.
"(My wife) She doesn't really think my day off pertains to rest ... Because I love her I decided to walk for seven hours at Sea World ... My wife really liked it and I love her for that," Hunter said, with his characteristic laugh.
