Toddler Dies After Fire Set By Sister At Detroit Home

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a 3-year-old Detroit girl has died following a blaze started by her 4-year-old sister playing with fire.

Detroit Fire Department Arson Unit Captain Pat McNulty told the Detroit Free Press on Wednesday that Ivory Ivey died following Tuesday's fire at her home on Cooper Street, near Warren Avenue. The girl had been rescued following the fire and taken to an area hospital for treatment.

McNulty says Ivory's sister was playing with matches and the fire trapped Ivory on the second story inside the home. He says the girl was found under a blow-up mattress.

The older child and an adult was able to escape, but the family and firefighters had a hard time getting to Ivory because the stairwell was soon cut off by flames.
