Tired Of The Cooler Temps? Blame Canada
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - It feels like fall in metro Detroit and the forecast shows we probably won't see summer-like temperatures at least through most of the week.
So what's happening?
National Weather Service Meteorologist Dan Thompson says, blame Canada.
"Well, we've had persistent upper level troughs in the area [a region of relatively low atmospheric pressure], and that's usually consistent with cold air Canadian air masses," Thompson told WWJ's Sandra McNeil.
"Just kind of the general weather pattern we've been in ... it's kind of the subject of continuing research — why we have air masses like that stay in place for a while," Thompson said. "But it's definitely been there for the last couple weeks or so."
Does this mean we're in for the worst this winter? Maybe, maybe not, said Thompson.
"You know, just because August is cool doesn't necessarily mean the winter's going to be cold," he said. "It can be, but not necessarily."
Thompson said, try not to worry: This week's cool spell doesn't mean summer's over in Metro Detroit. He said Metro Detroit will most likely see many more days in the 80s yet to come.
