Tips Sought In Murder Of Detroit 300 Volunteer
DETROIT (WWJ) - The family of a beloved Detroit community man is pleading with the public for any information on the person who shot and killed him back in June.
Marcel Jackson, a 39-year-old husband and father of six, was gunned down while working as a bouncer at the Pandemonium nightclub in downtown Detroit. Police said, on the night of June 20, when a man who had been kicked out of the club came back at around 3 a.m. and started shooting.
Jackson was a key volunteer with Detroit 300, the community patrol group that tracked down rapists and robbers. He was the key set-up person for patrols.
Jackson's widow, Hollie Jackson, his widow said he would help anyone in need.
"There was not one time if we were riding down the street and would see an accident, or see anyone hurt, that he would not stop. He stopped every single time to help," she told reporters on Friday.
Said his daughter, 12-year-old Tamia, "It's just gonna be hard living without a father, not being able to walk down the aisle with my father and (it's hard) for my sisters and brothers, too."
Talking to WWJ the day following the shooting, Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee called Jackson's death a "sad irony."
"We were all hurt as a community … and I'm sure the irony is not lost on anyone, because he has assisted our community in being safe," said Godbee. "And for him to be a victim of a violent crime it just really accentuates the fact that we have a lot to do as a community – step up and take responsibility for our actions." (More here).
