Tigers Take Game 3 Over Rangers 5-2
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Three home runs made the difference for the Detroit Tigers as they beat the Texas Rangers 5-2 in Game 3 of the AL championship series on Tuesday night.
As heard on 97.1 The Ticket and WXYT 1270 - Doug Fister pitched into the seventh inning getting three strikeouts and allowing two runs.
But the solo home runs by Victor Martinez, Jhonny Peralta and Miguel Cabrera in the 4th, 6th and 7th innings respectively, made the difference for the Tigers as the offense came alive for the pivotal Game 3 in the series to put the Tigers on the board with a win -- having come into the game down two games to none.
Cabrera added a tie breaking double in the fifth before belting the insurance homer later in the game.
Detroit dropped the first two games in Texas before turning to Fister, who won the decisive fifth game of the division series at Yankee Stadium last week. He was sharp again, allowing two runs and seven hits with no walks in 7 1-3 innings.
Jose Valverde, after pitching two innings the day before, worked around a leadoff double in the ninth for his third playoff save.
The Tigers look to tie the series when they play Game 4 on Wednesday putting Rick Porcello (14-9) on the mound against Matt Harrison for Texas.
Justin Verlander will pitch in Game 5 at home at Comerica.
