Tigers Return To Detroit With Odds Stacked Against Them
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Tigers returned to Detroit early Friday morning and are now facing an uphill battle after losing the first two games of the World Series to the San Francisco Giants.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, history isn't exactly on the Tigers' side: 50 teams have taken a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven World Series format and 40 of those teams went on to win the title.
After catching a red-eye flight from California, it's no surprise many players weren't in the mood to talk to reporters when they arrived at Detroit Metro Airport just before 6 a.m.
But pitcher Phil Coke said the team is glad to be back and everyone is looking forward to a three-game home stand at Comerica Park because this is where they can do work.
"I'm not really worried about it. We're back now and, I mean, it was a tough game, shoot what was it yesterday now? It was a tough game yesterday but, I mean, that's baseball. What do you do?" Coke told WWJ's Mike Campbell.
The last team to come back from an 0-2 hole in the Fall Classic was the 1996 New York Yankees who won four straight over the Atlanta Braves.
Dan Dickerson, the voice of Tigers Radio, said he thinks the team has what it takes to rally and take the series.
"I mean, let's face it, they're going to face (Matt) Cain and (Ryan) Vogelsong the next couple of days, two very good pitchers for the Giants. The runs might still be at a premium and the weather, I don't think is exactly going to heat up the bats, but this team has found ways to score enough runs to win," said Dickerson.
You can hear all the games on 97.1 The Ticket starting at 8:00 p.m.
