Tigers Recall Fan Favorite Tyler Collins From Triple-A Toledo
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) -- The Detroit Tigers have recalled outfielder Tyler Collins from Triple-A Toledo.
The team will option pitcher Buck Farmer to Toledo to open up a roster spot for Collins, who made headlines a couple of weeks ago for directing an obscene gesture towards fans at Comerica Park.
While playing center field on April 25, Collins misplayed a popup that ultimately led to starter Jordan Zimmermann giving up his first run of the season.
The crowd took exception to the play and rained down a chorus of boos. Collins responded as he made his way back to his position after the play by giving the middle finger to the hometown crowd.
Collins apologized following the 7-3 win over the Oakland Athletics.
"It was frustration, I don't want to hear that at home. We deal with that enough on the road," Collins said about getting booed. "With that being said, I should be more mature and more grown-up than that to be able to deal with it — that's where I apologize."
Collins was sent to Toledo two days after the incident, but did not receive an official punishment from the team or the MLB.
The Tigers begin a seven-game road trip on Monday with stops in Washington D.C. and Baltimore. Collins wouldn't have to face Detroit fans until the team's next home game on May 16 against the Minnesota Twins.
