Tigers Rain Delay Brings Back Memories

The Tigers lost to the Red Sox last night in a rain-shortened game at Fenway Park. Justin Verlander's record of pitching into the 6th inning went away although it shouldn't have, it wasn't his fault the game was halted. That being said, the Tiger's woes continue and I'm not convinced they are going to make the playoffs.
However, last night's rain soaked affair reminded me of one of the greatest memories from my childhood. I was probably nine or ten years old and the Tigers were playing on the road, pretty sure it was against Texas so the game didn't start until 8:30pm. My dad and I were watching the game on TV. I'm assuming then the games were done by Larry Osterman or Ray Lane or George Kell or any combination of the three. We were having one of those hot, summer rain storms and my dad says, "let's listen to the game in the garage". So, me and my dad headed out to our garage, opened the door and set up two lawn chairs. We listened to Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey and watched an awesome Michigan summer storm filled with lightning and a torrential downpour. Dad drank a PBR while I had a Faygo Rock and Rye and I can't fully explain why but it is one of my greatest memories. There was something about that Friday night that has stuck with me ever since. Just me, my dad and the Tigers.
So, the next time you're visiting your dad, grab a couple cold ones and suggest getting away from the TV and heading out to the garage to listen to the game (on 97.1 The Ticket, of course). I promise you, you'll be glad you did.
