Tigers' Maybin Likely To Begin Season On DL
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Detroit Tigers center fielder Cameron Maybin is likely to miss opening day while recovering from a fractured left wrist.
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Saturday that Maybin's wrist isn't healing quickly enough for him to be ready. Detroit starts the season April 5 at Miami.
Anthony Gose is expected to start in center with Maybin out.
Maybin had his wrist X-rayed on Friday.
"It showed signs of healing but he's still not ready to do baseball activity," Ausmus said. "Medically it wasn't surprising, but I guess I was being optimistic."
Maybin was injured in his first at-bat of the exhibition season when he was hit by a pitch thrown by Luis Severino of the New York Yankees.
"It's going to be a least another week before they look at him again," Ausmus said. "Once he gets the all-clear to start doing baseball work, he's got to build up. He's got to start swinging and build up to playing in games. I don't see how he's going to be ready at this point."
Maybin hit .267 with 10 homers and 59 RBI last season with Atlanta, then was traded to the Tigers.
