Tigers Lose To Red Sox 4-1; Verlander Streak Ends
BOSTON (WWJ/AP) - The Detroit Tigers lose to the Boston Red Sox 4-1 in 5 2/3rd innings after the game is called due to rain.
As heard on 97.1 The Ticket - the Tigers had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the sixth inning when the game was delayed due to rain.
Tigers ace Justin Verlander, who has pitched six-or-more innings in each of his last 63 starts
for the Tigers dating back to August 22, 2010, has the streak come to an abrupt end with the called game.
It marks the longest such streak by a major league pitcher since Steve Carlton did
so in 69 straight starts September 13, 1979-April 13, 1982. Verlander's streak of starts in which he has worked six-or-more innings is the longest by a Tigers pitcher since at least 1918.
Josh Beckett left the Boston Red Sox game in the third inning against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night with what the team called a back spasm.
Beckett motioned for the trainer to come to the mound after walking Miguel Cabrera to force in the first run against the Detroit Tigers. His lower left back was checked and Beckett walked slowly off the mound. He was replaced with two outs by Clayton Mortensen, who retired the next batter, Prince Fielder.
Beckett began the game with a 5-9 record and a 4.57 ERA with a 1-5 mark in his previous nine starts. His name was mentioned in trade speculation before Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline for non-waiver deals.
He retired the first eight batters before allowing an infield single, hitting a batter and walking two.
