Tigers Fail To Shine, American League Loses 8-0
KANSAS CITY, Mo (WWJ/AP) - The 83rd All-Star Game belongs to the National League, and it's not even close. The NL, which claims home-field advantage for the World Series, rolls from start to finish and wins 8-0, handing the AL its third straight loss.
The American League, who boasted three Detroit Tigers, including Justin Verlander - the American League starter in Tuesday night's All-Star game, 2012 All-Star Home Run Derby winner Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera, just couldn't connect to make any dent in the lopsided game.
Verlander allowed five-runs on four hits during one inning of pitching, Fielder who played at first base went 0-2 at bat and Cabrera was hitless in his only appearance at bat.
San Francisco's Pablo Sandoval had the big blow in the five-run first -- a three-run triple off Detroit's Justin Verlander. Last year's AL Cy Young Award winner was roughed up for five runs during his 35-pitch first inning.
San Francisco's Melky Cabrera added a two-run homer as the NL added three more in the fourth inning. The Giants' Matt Cain hurled two shutout innings. That was followed by a shutout inning apiece by Washington's Gio Gonzalez and Stephen Strasburg and the L.A. Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw.
The 40-year-old Chipper Jones got a standing ovation when he came to bat in the sixth inning. In his eighth and final All-Star game, Jones delivered a pinch-hit, seeing-eye single. He is retiring at the end of the season.
Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, who has authored two one-hitters this season, pitched a one-hit sixth inning.
The National League is trying to stretch their winning streak in the mid-summer classic to three games. That has upped the senior circuit's edge over the American League to 42-38-2.
The National League now gets home field advantage in the World Series.
