Tigers Contribute Big In MLB All-Star Game

DETROIT (CBS DETROIT) - The Detroit Tigers brought six players to the All-Star Game Tuesday, the largest contingent of any team in the league. The group quickly justified the selections.
Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer started the game, and in his one inning of work he faced the minimum. He gave up no hits, no runs and recorded a strikeout. Detroit manager (and on that night, American League manager) Jim Leyland took him out after one inning because Scherzer threw 122 pitches in his outing Saturday.
2012 Triple Crown winner and Detroit third baseman Miguel Cabrera struck out in his first at bat, but when he returned to the plate, he led off the inning by slamming a double, igniting the American League offense and ultimately scoring the first run. Cabrera, who moved to third base before last season when Prince Fielder joined the team, also made several great defensive plays throughout the game.
While Justin Verlander did not pitch because he started Sunday before the All-Star break, Fielder, right fielder Torii Hunter and shortstop Jhonny Peralta all got into the game. Fielder and Peralta both got hits.
Collectively, the Tigers batted .500 in the All-Star Game.
Now, if Detroit does manage a return to the World Series, it will have home field advantage.
