Tigers Cabrera On Paternity Leave, Santos Recalled
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - The Detroit Tigers placed first baseman Miguel Cabrera on paternity leave and recalled catcher Omir Santos from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.
Santos was optioned back to Toledo after the Tigers' 2-0 win over the Rays.
Cabrera is expected to rejoin the team on Friday, Tigers manager Jim Leyland said
Santos was the starter in Thursday's game. Alex Avila started the previous 18 games at catcher.
Avila, hitting .418 with six homers and 16 RBIs in 20 games this month, is set to catch all three games of a series that starts Friday night at Minnesota.
Catcher Victor Martinez has been limited to designated hitter because of a sore left knee. Leyland didn't rule out Martinez being ready for some catching work in the next week or so.
Also, outfielder Brennan Boesch was out of Thursday's lineup because of a sprained right thumb. He left Wednesday's game because of the injury.
Boesch, who was examined by a doctor, has also strained his biceps while compensating for the thumb. He said the pain associated with the thumb is manageable. Leyland said Boesch is day to day.
