Tigers C Avila Suffers Possible Concussion
CLEVELAND (AP) — Detroit catcher Alex Avila has been taken to a hospital and is being tested for a possible concussion after leaving the Tigers' game against Cleveland on Thursday.
Avila was struck in the mask when Nick Swisher fouled off a pitch in the fourth inning. He appeared to be bleeding from his left ear but remained in the game after being treated by a team trainer. Avila was removed in the bottom of the fifth and replaced by Brayan Pena.
Detroit manager Jim Leyland didn't have the results of the tests being done on Avila and didn't know whether his catcher, who made the All-Star team in 2011, would be on the flight to New York, where the Tigers begin a series Friday.
Avila is batting .198 but hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning off Indians closer Chris Perez in Monday's 4-2 win.
