Tigers Agree To Terms On Two-Year Contract With J.D. Martinez
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with outfielder J.D. Martinez, thus avoiding arbitration.
Martinez, 28, finished the 2015 season with a .282 (168x596) batting average with 93 runs scored, 33 doubles, two triples, 38 home runs and 102 RBI. He was selected to the American League All-Star Team for the first time in his career and won his first career Silver Slugger Award. Martinez was also one of three finalists for the American League Gold Glove as an outfielder after finishing the season with a .993 fielding percentage (282TC/2E).
Martinez ranked tied for third in the AL with 15 outfield assists, while he was fifth with 319 total bases and 73 extra-base hits, seventh with 102 RBI and eighth with 38 home runs and a .535 slugging percentage. Martinez became the seventh player in Tigers history to hit 38-or-more home runs and drive in 100-or-more runs, joining Miguel Cabrera (2010, 2012, 2013), Norm Cash (1961), Rocky Colavito (1961), Cecil Fielder (1990, 1991), Hank Greenberg (1937, 1938, 1940, 1946) and Dean Palmer (1999).
In five seasons at the major league level with Houston (2011-13) and Detroit (2014-15), Martinez has a .275 (533x1936) career batting average with 237 runs scored, 107 doubles, eight triples, 85 home runs and 304 RBI in 533 games.
With this signing, the club has reached agreement with all its arbitration eligible players for 2016.
