Tigers Acquire Jeff Baker From Chicago Cubs
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers announced the club has acquired infielder/outfielder Jeff Baker from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for two players to be named later on or before October 31, 2012.
Baker, 31, batted .269 (36x134) with 10 doubles, a triple, four home runs and 20 RBI in 54 games with the Cubs this season. He is hitting .275 (25x91) with eight doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI against lefthanded pitchers this season.
A veteran of eight seasons at the major league level with the Colorado Rockies (2005-09) and Cubs (2009-12), he is hitting .270 (352x1305) with 85 doubles, 11 triples, 37 home runs and 173 RBI in 514 games during his career. Baker is batting .304 (185x608) with 44 doubles, five triples, 25 home runs and 97 RBI versus lefthanded pitchers during his major league career.
Baker has seen action at first base (89 games), second base (153 games), third base (85 games), left field (10 games) and right field (54 games) during his major league career.
He was originally selected by Colorado in the fourth round of the 2002 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Baker was acquired by the Cubs from the Rockies on July 2, 2009, in exchange for Al Alburquerque.
