Tigers 6, Rays 3

DETROIT (WWJ) - A four-run eighth inning gave the Tigers the insurance needed as Detroit goes on to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3 on Monday evening.

As heard on 97.1 The Ticket, starting pitcher Phil Coke left in the fourth inning after what appeared to be an injury to his right ankle.

Victor Martinez hit a two-run double and Jhonny Peralta had a two-run single in the eighth inning, lifting the Detroit Tigers over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Charlie Furbush (1-0) pitched 3 2-3 scoreless innings of relief in his major league debut after Detroit starter Phil Coke was injured.

Former Rays reliever Joaquin Benoit worked a scoreless eighth. Jose Valverde gave up two runs in the ninth but avoided a total collapse by getting former Tiger Johnny Damon to line out to first baseman Miguel Cabrera with two on.

Jeremy Hellickson (5-3) allowed two runs and four hits in 6 1- 3 innings. He had a shot to be the first Tampa Bay rookie to win five straight starts, but his light-hitting teammates weren't much help.

Tune in to 97.1 The Ticket when the Detroit Tigers go for two in a row against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night in Detroit.
