Tigers 4, Yankees 2
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Tigers were off to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning and went on to beat the New York Yankees 4-2 on Tuesday night.
As heard on 97.1 The Ticket, the Tigers swapped second basemen with their Class AAA Toledo farm club, optioning out Will Rhymes and bringing up Scott Sizemore. It was slightly less than a year ago when Sizemore, then hitting .206, made the trip in reverse.
97.1 The Ticket's Jeff Riger reported early on Scott Sizemore hit a single and a double in his first two at bats, three hits total in his return, helping the Tigers snap a seven- game losing streak. Sizemore had been hitting .400 in the Class AAA Toledo farm club.
Leadoff man Austin Jackson hit a double and a triple, and Sizemore hit a double and two singles batting behind him.
Brad Penny (2-3) pitched six strong innings without allowing an earned run for the Tigers. Daniel Schlereth pitched the seventh and eighth, and Jose Valverde finished for his sixth save.
CC Sabathia (2-2) went seven innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits. He struck out six and walked three.
In Monday's 5-3 loss to the Yankees, catcher Alex Avila homered twice to help Detroit tie Monday's game, but Jose Valverde allowed two runs in the ninth to send the Tigers to their seventh consecutive loss. The Tigers haven't dropped eight straight since Sept. 16-23, 2005.
