Tigers 4, White Sox 2
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - RBI's by Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, and Delmon Young helped the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 4-2 on Friday.
As heard on 97.1 The Ticket - the Tigers took game one of a three-game series against the first place White Sox (50-43) and chipped away at Chicago's first place lead in the AL Central, leaving Detroit (50-44) just a half game out of first place.
Justin Verlander (11-5) pitched eight strong innings, striking out six, giving up a two-run homer in the third by Alejandro De Aza.
Detroit backed their ace with timely hitting in the victory over Chicago.
Detroit inched closer to the top of the AL Central. Detroit was six back after a loss to the Chicago Cubs on June 12.
Jake Peavy (7-7) struck out the first five batters he faced and seven overall, but Detroit scored three runs in the third.
Jose Valverde finished for his 18th save in 22 chances.
