Tigers 3, Royals 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WWJ)- Starting pitcher Justin Verlander gets his first win in dramatic fashion as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Monday.
As heard on 97.1 The Ticket - Verlander (1-1) took it to a nail-biting final, a bases loaded - 100 mph fastball, his 131st pitch of the night, to strike out the Royals' Alex Gordon for the last out in the game. Verlander struck out nine, allowing just two runs in the win.
Austin Jackson started the game belting out a home run before Brandon Inge made it a 3-1 ballgame in the fifth inning when he hit a two-run homer to center bringing in Jhonny Peralta.
The final inning saw the most action of the night as Verlander loaded the bases, allowed a run to make it a 3-2 game and got behind in the count to Gordon who was at bat with bases loaded and two out.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland came out to the mound and briefly spoke to Verlander, who stayed in the game and finished with the 3-2 win over the Royals for the first game of the three game series.
Danny Duffy (1-1) went just over six innings allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk for the Royals.
