Tigers 3 , Red Sox 0

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The Tigers salvage one game out of the four game series shutting-out the Boston Red Sox 3-0 Sunday night.

As heard on 97.1 The Ticket, Detroit managed to finish strong with an excellent performance by starting pitcher Justin Verlander and split the day-night doubleheader.

Verlander took a shutout into the eighth inning to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Red Sox .

The Ticket's Jeff Riger spoke with Don Kelly post game: "I'm just glad we got this win, we've got to turn around tomorrow and go after our next one," said Kelly about the first win in the Red Sox season series.

Verlander (5-3) allowed four hits and walked two in 7 2-3 innings, throwing a career-high 132 pitches. The pitch count matched the highest by a Tigers pitcher since Felipe Lira threw 135 on Aug. 11, 1996.

Josh Beckett (4-2) took his first loss since April 5 - his first start of the season. Beckett gave up two runs on five hits and a season-high five walks in six innings.

David Ortiz had a pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning off Jose Valverde to give the Boston Red Sox a 4-3 victory over the Tigers in the opener.
