Tigers 2, Royals 1

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - It takes an extra inning but the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals  2-1 on Tuesday night.

As heard on 97.1 The Ticket,  Ramon Santiago stepped up in the 10th inning to hit a solo home run to break the tie and win the game for the Tigers to even the series against the Royals.

Santiago, who entered the game in the eighth as a pinch-runner, lifted Aaron Crow's pitch over the right-field wall for only his fourth homer of the year. Joaquin Benoit (4-3) pitched two innings for the Tigers, matching his longest outing of the season.

Speaking post game on 97.1 The Ticket Ramon Santiago said when he stepped up to the plate he just "tried to make a good swing."

"The fans have been supportive all year," said Santiago. "They deserve a championship."

Crow (3-4) struck out Wilson Betemit with the bases loaded to end the ninth, and he got the first out of the 10th before allowing Santiago's surprising homer.

Detroit's Doug Fister retired the first 18 hitters he faced. He ended up allowing a run and four hits over 7 2-3 innings. He struck out six.
