Tiger Woods Finally Wins
By: Jeff Lesson- Lesson on Golf
I admit it. I feel a little like Bob Dole giving a concession speech.
Tiger Woods crushed the field Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational giving him his first PGA Tour win since 2009. Actually, the last time he won on tour the Lions were about to be 2-14. Doesn't' that seem like a long time ago?
And I'm the guy who said he will never win another major. To be honest, I also was not convinced he would ever win again anywhere. Despite the fact Luke Donald and Rory McElroy did not play (#1 and 2 in the world), Woods still performed well in the clutch-something he had not done in nearly three years.
He still has not won another major. His next chance will be The Masters in two weeks where he will now be the overwhelming favorite. He has not won a major since 2008 and has not won a Masters since 2005.
Hey, it is not easy to win majors! That is why I believe Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 majors is still safe from the 14 that the 36 year old Woods has won.
Woods is one again in the mix as one of the better players in the world. But he no longer is "the" player who we should expect to win each time he steps out there. That player has come and gone. We may never see domination like that again.
I will still take Mickelson or McElroy over Woods at Augusta. But it sure does make PGA Tour golf more interesting with Woods winning again.
