Tiger Woods-Are You Kidding Me? (Lesson On Golf Blog)

By: Jeff Lesson

Tiger Woods missed the cut at The Wells Fargo Championship this past week on the heels of his worst performance as a professional at The Masters.

Fine.  No breaking news there.  By now we all realize that Tiger will never again be what he once was.

But what happened enroute to him missing the cut by one shot was beyond mystifying.

On the par five fifth hole he pulled a shot into the trees.  His ball vanished never to be found.

The rule is you get five minutes to find your ball.  If a ball is not found within that time frame, a one shot penalty is assessed and the golfer must go back and hit again from the same spot.

Inexplicably, a PGA Tour official awarded Tiger Woods a free drop.  As such, he suffered no penalty despite losing his ball.

The reason given was that a couple fans saw it come out of the tree.  No one ever saw anyone pick up the ball.  Another fan later said he never saw the ball come out of the tree.

Bottom line is unless there is some empirical evidence that someone picked up the ball and walked away with it, a lost ball is a lost ball.  Even if your name is Tiger Woods.

One can only hope that the fact Tiger was about to miss the cut had nothing to do with the ruling.  We are not suggesting that it did have anything to do with it.  But there is no denying when Tiger is not around to play the weekend, not many care.
