Tickets Sold Out For Monday Night Bills-Jets Game At Ford Field; Thousands Waited At Box Office
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) -- Die-hard football fans lined up outside Ford Field in Detroit as early at midnight on Sunday to get what was left of the tickets for Monday night's matchup between the Bills and Jets.
About 500 free tickets were distributed with a limit of two per person, disappointing the majority of the almost 2,000 people who waited at the box office. On Saturday morning, officials said tickets were also completely sold out online.
One fan, Danielle from Belleville, was one of about 200 people who received the free tickets, but had to camp out starting at 4 a.m.
"It's exciting, but at the same time it's a little sad because not everybody is going to get the opportunity to see the tickets for free," Danielle said. "I'm excited, I'm happy about it, but it took great lengths to get these tickets."
Another fan, Lawrence from Detroit, didn't get to take advantage of the free offer, but said that he supports the city hosting the game.
"I think it's great -- any way to get some money here is cool with me," Lawrence said. "But they need to let me in because I am a die-hard football fan."
As reported by CBS Detroit's Ashley Dunkak, Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand reached out Wednesday to the Bills and to the league about hosting the game.
"For us, it's about the partnership of the NFL," Lewand said. "It's about 32 teams who work together Monday through Saturday and then try to beat each other up on Sunday, and this is a way for us to be able to help out."
Ford Field hosted a game between the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants in 2010 when the Vikings home stadium, the Metrodome, had its dome collapsed and ripped.
All seating will be general admission.
The game will air on CBS only in the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets TV markets.
