Three New Catholic Bishops For Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit adding on three new bishops. On Thursday, three priests will be ordained bishops by Archbishop Allen Vigneron.
The men to be ordained are Msgr. Donald Hanchon, the current pastor of Holy Redeemer Parish in southwest Detroit; Fr. Michael Byrnes, the current vice-rector of Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit; and Fr. José Arturo Cepeda, a priest of the Archdiocese of San Antonio who currently is rector of Assumption Seminary in San Antonio. The men will be "auxiliary bishops" in the Catholic Church, meaning they will assist Archbishop Vigneron in his shepherding of the six-county, 1.4 million member Archdiocese of Detroit.
The ordination ceremony, held during a Catholic Mass, will include a reading of the letter from Pope Benedict XVI naming the three priests as bishops, as well as an examination of the candidate; the laying on of hands; the imposition of the Book of Gospels; the prayer of consecration; the anointing of the bishops' heads; the presentation of the Book of Gospels; and the investiture with rings, mitres, and pastoral staffs.
The ceremony takes place at 2pm at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, located at 9844 Woodward Avenue in Detroit. And while the church is expected to be filled to capacity, a live video stream is available for anyone wishing to still take part in the event.
