Metro Detroiters Flock To Woodward For 20th Annual Dream Cruise
(WWJ) -- Huge crowds packed Woodward Avenue for the 20th annual Dream Cruise on Friday and Saturday.
Spectators lined Woodward on the 16-mile stretch from Ferndale to Pontiac, some in private viewing parties. One viewer, Becky Reed, said that she goes to the cruise every year.
"You see all the people and the different cars with your family. It's fun," Reed said who added that some of her favorite classic cars include older Chevys.
"I like them and the pickups," Reed said. "I really like the pickup trucks -- not the loud ones though."
Even Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander used the event to show off his brand new orange Lamborghini.
Janet Wood of Lake Orion caught a glimpse of the cruise from Adler's Towing, which held a private watch party along southbound Woodward in Pontiac. Wood said that she used to cruise down Woodward in her dad's car when she was younger.
Even though the cruise mainly takes place on Saturday, many people believe that Friday is the day to be there.
"I like Friday because there's more hot rods than everyday cars," one cruiser said. "But I like everyday people coming out here and seeing them too."
Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter cut a ceremonial ribbon on Friday which stretched across Nine Mile with a giant pair of scissors to signal the opening of the now 20-year-old event. He said that after a long week of cleaning up after Monday's disastrous rain and floods, it was time for the city and its residents to celebrate.
"We declared a state of emergency on Tuesday and we've been busy all week long -- cleaning basements and fixing streets and cleaning up after the devastating storm," Coulter said. "You know -- after the hard work is done -- in Ferndale, we know how to party."
