Thousands Of Honeybees Swarm Lapeer Students Amid Lesson
LAPEER, Mich. (AP) - A group of Michigan students had a close encounter with thousands of honeybees as part of a lesson about the insects.
The Flint Journal reports the seventh-grade students are part of the Outdoor Club at Rolland-Warner Middle School in Lapeer.
Science teacher Chris Prill led students Thursday in creating smoke to temper the bees, cracking open compartments of hives in a clearing behind the school to harvest honey. The experience helps teach students about how bees live and produce honey.
Prill says it was the second harvest, with the first yielding 25 gallons of honey. Honey will be bottled and sold to help fund the program.
Twelve-year-old Justin Ranshaw says he took part to get over a fear of bees after he was attacked last year by wasps.
