Thousands Hit The Streets For Detroit Free Press Marathon
DETROIT (WWJ) - Thousands of people hit the streets of Detroit and cruised along international waters as part of the Detroit Free Press marathon Sunday.
Winners of the marathon are both Russian; Forty-three year old Viacheslav Shabunin for the men, and 41-year-old Liubov Denisova for the women.
Heather Betts of Dearborn Heights ran the half marathon, 13.1 miles and she feels good about that.
"It's perfect, it's not too cold, it's sun shining - not windy," said Betts. "I do it every year, 'cause it's fun."
And Betts says by running she could pretty much eat whatever she wants.
Teresa Balenberger of Holly ran the half-marathon with her daughter, she tells WWJ's Beth Fisher that she started training for this in January.
"The race was fantastic," she said."The last three miles were tough."
Aimee Gissell of Royal Oak ran a personal best in the half-marathon clocking in at two hours and twenty-six minutes.
"It's a great race to go over the Ambassador Bridge and through the tunnel, it's the only international underwater mile - and it's fantastic," said Gissel.
More than 15,000 people took part in the marathon and half-marathon.
