The Snack Attack: Tommy's Superfoods Is What Your Mom Wants To See In Your Freezer [TASTE TEST]
The Snack Attack is taking a detour down the veggie highway because hey, not all snacks have to be junk food after all.
And let's face it -- when mom comes over, you need to have some good, healthy foods in your fridge. Which is why you should check out Tommy's Superfoods.
A little while ago, a representative sent me some samples to try out and although I was skeptical at first, these actually turned out to be pretty good.
These definitely aren't your grandma's vegetables. The frozen, pre-seasoned dishes are made with nutritious non-GMO veggies and grains, blended with non-irradiated spices and extra-virgin olive oil, and are sold in BPA-free, microwaveable steam bags. Cooking up tasty veggies couldn't be any easier. You can make these as a side dish or as a meal on their own.
Tommy's Superfoods can be found in Kroger stores throughout metro Detroit.
Fiesta Quinoa
"Like a southwestern feast in a bag when quinoa finds the perfect balance with hearty seasonings like peppers, beans, lime juice, cilantro and mango – yes mango. These flavors just work."
This dish might not look that appealing, but what it lacks visually it makes up for in flavor. I didn't know that quinoa could taste this good. And the best part is the mango, it adds an unexpected sweetness that balances everything out. I added some hot sauce because I like a little more spice.
INGREDIENTS: White quinoa, brown rice, red quinoa, mango chunks, pinto beans, tomatoes, chili peppers (poblano), extra virgin olive oil, lime juice, cilantro, Tommy's southwest seasoning (sea salt, chili pepper, spices, garlic, onion, paprika and rice concentrate).
Brussels Sprouts
"Forget everything you know about Brussels sprouts and start fresh. No heavy sauce needed with super nutritious sprouts lightly seasoned in a hearty BBQ blend then mingled with mushroom, chunky garlic and red bell peppers."
I didn't much care for Brussels sprouts before trying this dish and unfortunately, I still feel the same way. The seasoning was really tasty, though.
INGREDIENTS: Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, green onions, red bell peppers, extra virgin olive oil, Tommy's BBQ seasoning (spices, sea salt, roasted garlic, paprika & toasted onion).
Root Fusion
"We added Fuji apples to beets, turnips, and carrots to balance things out with a touch of sweetness. It's tough to describe this mellow, complex yet crowd-pleasing fusion of flavor. The perfect blend to keep things interesting and delicious."
I was most excited to try these because I love sweet potatoes, and it definitely didn't disappoint. First, the sage seasoning with this dish is spot on. I wish I had a bottle of it! The carrots were surprisingly sweet and the apple chunks added a pleasant sweetness. The sweet potatoes were perfect, fluffy on the inside with a crisp edge, but I wasn't crazy for the beets.
INGREDIENTS: Sliced carrots, diced sweet potatoes, beets, Fuji apples, extra virgin olive oil, Tommy's sage seasoning (spices, sea salt, garlic)
Asparagus with Bacon
"We learned through trial and error that bacon is never, ever an error. It works with everything, but even better with asparagus, carrots, peppers and loads of fresh lemon juice to lighten up the mood and make your buds dance."
For being frozen, I couldn't believe how fresh the asparagus tasted. I thought this dish would have more bacon but what was there had a nice, smoky flavor. I really liked the herb seasoning and sweet carrots but there were a few too many onions for my liking. Add some chicken, rice and sweet and sour sauce and you've got yourself a spin on stir-fry.
INGREDIENTS: Asparagus cuts & tips, sliced carrots, diced red bell peppers, chopped onions, all natural uncured smoked bacon, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, Tommy's garlic & herb seasoning (garlic, spices, sea salt)
