The Anniversary Of The Great Lake State
On January 26th 1837, Michigan became a state. To celebrate, let's take a trivia tour around the mitten to remind us why our state is so great!
First, there is no other state that boasts five awesome lakes like ours. Standing anywhere in the Michigan, a person is within 85 miles of one of these Great Lakes, which are: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior.
The residents of our state invented many products that impacted the nation. Ransom E. Olds started the first Olds Motor Vehicle Company in Lansing in 1897. A decade later, Henry Ford would start his car company and invent the assembly line.
Vernor's ginger ale was the first soda pop made in the U.S. and the Kellogg Company put Battle Creek on the map in 1866, launching the beginning of the dry cereal industry with its corn flakes.
We're tops in the world, too, for some things.
Our U.P. is the largest commercial deposit of native copper anywhere; the Mackinac Bridge is one of the longest suspension bridges; and our freshwater shoreline is the longest in the world. These facts are a just a few of the reasons to be proud to of the wolverine state.
