Tests Find No Asian Carp DNA In Michigan Waters
LANSING (AP) - State officials say tests show no Asian carp DNA has been found in Michigan waters. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment says the tests for bighead and silver carp DNA conducted Sept. 15 to Oct. 5 found no DNA in the Galien, St. Joseph and Paw Paw rivers in southwest Michigan.
Office of the Great Lakes director Patricia Birkholz said Friday in a release that the findings are encouraging. She adds the state remains very concerned about the threat the fish pose to the Great Lakes Basin.
Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Minnesota are suing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers over its handling of the carp threat, particularly its refusal to close two navigational locks on Chicago-area waterways that could provide a pathway to Lake Michigan.
