Terry Foster: Wings Can't Stop Sharks, Or Catch A Break

Detroit -- The Red Wings can storm the net and dominate. They can get great play from goalie Jimmy Howard, and they can take games into overtime.

They can sometimes outhit and outthink the Sharks.

But the bottom line is, they cannot beat the San Jose Sharks.

Now the Wings' season is days from ending following a 4-3 overtime loss to the Sharks on Wednesday night at Joe Louis Arena. Detroit is down 3-0 in this Western Conference semifinal series.

It was the second overtime game of the series, and all three games have been won by one goal.

The Wings can sting and move like bees like they did in the first period; they outhit the Sharks 17-3 during one stretch. But they cannot stun the Sharks, who are about to make easy prey of them.

Whether it is blind luck or good fortune, the Sharks endure. The Wings showed grit and determination in grabbing a 3-2 lead late in the game. But the Sharks are relentless. They are pest that won't go away. And the bigger and more-physical team appears to be wearing down the Wings.
