Terry Foster: Miguel Cabrera's Talent Isn't Appreciated By Tigers Fans

Detroit — Alex Avila enjoys the daily show in the batting cage. That's where Tigers teammate Miguel Cabrera turns his bat into a magic wand.

He can reach the seats with ease — right field, left field, left-center.

"He does things that you've never seen anyone else do," Avila said.

The games are just as spectacular. Cabrera is one of the all-time great hitters. This season he's hitting .338 with five homers, 15 RBIs and an OPS of 1.069.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland compared him to the greats of sports, like Michael Jordan. He has the talent for such comparisons, but lacks the longevity and championship rings. Cabrera can carry a team for long stretches. He simply needs more consistent help around him.

Cabrera is a natural hitter. He doesn't study the game as much as others because he doesn't need to. Cabrera faces pitchers once and their arm slots and velocity are etched in his mind.
