Teens Charged In Attempted Home Invasion
HARPER WOODS (WWJ) - Two teenagers faced a judge Wednesday, accused in an alleged home invasion in Harper Woods that prompted an 11-year-old girl to hide in a closet to call 9-1-1.
Schaquiel Niko Sanderfield, 17, of Detroit, and 17-year-old Jala Jhane Sanderfield, of Warren, have each been charged with attempted home invasion.
They are out on bond following their arraignment Wednesday in Harper Woods District Court.
Schaquiel is allegedly one of two people who tried to break into a home while Sanderfield was the alleged getaway driver. The teens were arrested as they attempted to flee the scene. The 911 dispatcher praised the girl for her composure in making the call and thwarting a possible robbery.
In court, Schaquiel answered the judge's questions about school. "The highest grade I completed was 10th. I'm still in school ... South Lake High." He explained why he's been living with relatives. "My mother, she was on drugs when she had me," he said.
A family member who did not want to be named said Jala has a 3.0 grade point average. She said that both are "really good kids" who just made a stupid decision.
The judge said he said bond at $2,000 each, 10 percent. He said the two were cooperative with police and neither had a criminal record.
