Teens Can Get Free Lesson From Race Car Driver
AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - It's a driving lesson like no other this weekend at the Palace. During the Teens Drive Smart Tour, hundreds of young people will get behind the wheel with a race car driver.
"This is not your lecture sitting in a classroom and talk about what driving's like — this is a performance driving experience," said former NASCAR driver Matt Jaskol.
He told WWJ Newsradio 950's Sandra McNeil the lesson will start with a discussion of things like safety and distracted driving.
Then, the fun begins.
The teens get behind the wheel of a BMW, and, said Jaskol, "We'll wet down a surface for them, and — I don't want to give away all the tricks of how we do it — but utilizing some of the devices inside the car with the instructor next to them, we'll actually have them induce a slide, and then do a recovery from that slide."
Jaskol said safe driving is a great deal about confidence.
"If you don't have a confidence behind the wheel of a vehicle, you're not a safe driver," he said.
The class is open licensed drivers between the ages of 15 and 21. There are two sessions at the Palace of Auburn Hills on both Saturday and Sunday.
