Teens Arrested In Shooting Of 6-Year-Old Detroit Boy
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Two teens have been arrested in the shooting death of a 6-year-old boy during a possible carjacking in Detroit.
Authorities say hearings for the two 15-year-olds could be held Tuesday in juvenile court.
The 6-year-old was in critical condition Monday. He was shot Sunday night, as he sat in a car with his mother and her friend at the intersection of Balfour and Waveney on Detroit's east side.
Police say the teens approached the car, one of them carrying an assault rifle, and fired shots at the car, hitting the child in the back seat. The mother's friend was grazed. The child's mother, who was not injured, was able to get to a nearby business to call for help. The little boy was rushed to St. John Hospital.
Police Chief Ralph Godbee said despite the age of the suspects, the shooting is "serious" and "not juvenile pranks."
This is the third shooting of a youngster in the city in less than a month.
On Monday, Feb. 20, 9-month-old Delric Miller was shot to death when someone sprayed his family's home on Greenview with gunshots. The house was riddled with about 40 bullets from what appears to have been an AK-47-type assault rifle. No arrests have been made.
Weeks earlier, on Jan 31, 12-year-old Kade'jah Davis was killed following a verbal altercation about a cell phone at her home on Ferguson, near Seven Mile on Detroit's northwest side. A 19-year-old man and his 35-year-old mother were arrested.
