Teens Accused Of Vandalizing Field For Special Needs Kids
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ/AP) - Southfield police have arrested two 15-year-old boys they say spray-painted graffiti at a baseball field built for children with disabilities.
Police announced the arrests on Thursday. One of the boys is from Southfield, and the other is from Detroit.
The baseball diamond is used by children with special needs, including Down Syndrome and cerebral palsy.
It was difficult to remove the graffiti because the field is made of rubber designed to create traction for wheelchairs, walkers and crutches. The damage to the Miracle Field in the Detroit suburb is estimated at $60,000.
Police said the suspects were being investigated in a case of stolen backpacks from the Southfield Municipal Complex's tennis courts last month. During that investigation, police said they came to believe the boys were responsible for vandalizing the Miracle Field.
