Teen Who Repeatedly Stabbed Younger Sister Gets Blended Sentence

GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) - A Grand Rapids-area teenager who repeatedly stabbed his sister will spend time in a juvenile detention center and then prison.

The 15-year-old pleaded guilty to attempted murder in August and appeared in Kent County court Tuesday for his sentence. During the hearing, the boy's sister told him that she loves him and misses him, The Grand Rapids Press reported.

"I'm not mad," she said. "Things will never be the same, but I hope they will get better."

Sheriff's deputies found the 13-year-old girl with multiple stab wounds last March at the family's home in Caledonia Township, south of Grand Rapids. The teen called 911 and was still at the home when deputies arrived. A 3-inch knife was used in the stabbing.

Prosecutor Laura Clifton said the teen could spend about three years in prison if he does well in juvenile detention. He'll be evaluated after age 19.

The teen apologized to his family in court, saying that he's "going to work hard to understand what caused this."

The teen is not being named because of his age.
