Teen To Remain In Custody In Oakland County School Shooting Threat Case
PONTIAC (WWJ/AP) - An Oakland County teenager who was arrested after authorities say he threatened a shooting at his suburban Detroit high school will remain in juvenile detention for now.
The Oakland Press of Pontiac reports the boy, who now is 15, was given an update on his case Thursday at a disposition hearing.
He earlier pleaded no contest to a false report of an act of terrorism and could remain in confinement until the age of 19. He's been in custody since February.
Another hearing is set for June 30.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said the teen sent a group text, warning friends to stay home because he was going to "shoot up" Milford High School. One message said he was going to "Columbine this s***" — comparing his plans to the 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Colorado.
Students who saw the message, on the social media app KIK, told their parents, the parents called police, and the teen was arrested.
Bouchard said nine firearms — including long guns and handguns — were removed from the teen's Highland Township home.
The boy's lawyer Deanna Kelle, said he's "a good kid" who has "never been in any type of trouble at school or otherwise."
His name has not been released due to his age.
