Teen Suspects Arrested In Fatal Carjacking
DETROIT (WWJ) - Two teens have been arrested for the carjacking and murder of a man at a restaurant on Detroit's east side earlier this week.
Police say meticulous and thorough investigative work by homicide investigators and the Comprehensive Violence Reduction Partnership (CVRP) led to the arrest of 19-year-old Victor Jerome Newell and 18-year-old Trenton Anthony Shell.
The two are accused of shooting and killing 23-year-old Wyman Shaver and stealing his SUV early Thursday, July 12, outside of the Olympia Coney Island near Chalmers and Harper.
When officers arrived, they found Shaver on the street, suffering from a gunshot wound. He later died at a hospital. Police say Shaver was in his 2004 Range Rover when an armed man approached and ordered him out. He was shot as he exited the vehicle.
Officers found the vehicle parked in a garage on San Juan Street eight hours after the shooting, and put it under surveillance. Newell and Shell were arrested when they entered that garage.
The two teens are facing charges including felony murder, carjacking, felony firearms and more. Both suspects are expected to be arraigned on Monday, July 16.
